An EPP code is an authorization key provided by your current registrar during the registration of your domain. This unique code provides an additional layer of security when transferring a domain AWAY from your current registrar. Suppose you are transferring your domain registration to a new registrar. In that case, you must contact your current registrar to obtain your domain's EPP code (also known as an authorization key, authentication code, or transfer key). Note that instructions for obtaining EPP codes vary depending on your registrar.
The Internet Corporation coordinates all domain administration for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), and there are specific rules for transferring domains between registrars. These can be viewed on the ICAAN site (this external link will open in a new tab):
These rules state that the EPP code can be sent only to the email address listed in the publicly available WHOIS record for that domain.
According to Section 2.1.3 of the above document, authorization can only be granted by the Administrative Contact (referred to by ICANN as the "Transfer Contact") and requires:
""Consent from a person or entity that has an email address that matches the Transfer Contact's email address."
Tip: Make sure that your domain's personal and business information (WHOIS) is correct for your request to be successful.
Updating WHOIS Information
The first step you must take to transfer your domain to a new registrar is to identify your current registrar. There are many online domain search tools you can use to find out which is the current registrar for your domain. Some examples are https://www.whois.com/ or https://lookup.icann.org/.
If the domain is in your Client Area and you wish to transfer your domain AWAY from HOST (to a new registrar), you can obtain your EPP code on your domain name within your Client Area.
